Pussy Has Been on Sale Since 2400 BCE—Let’s Talk About It

Sex in exchange for value isn’t new. In fact, prostitution has been around since at least 2400 BCE. But here’s a dark truth: in some cultures, the original purpose of prostitution was to initiate young girls into womanhood once they reached puberty. Disgusting, right?

By the 18th century, the practice evolved—though still problematic. In parts of West Africa, some leaders used prostitution as a source of tax revenue, sending women to sell their bodies for profit. By the 19th century, prostitution had found a new market: married men whose wives weren’t putting out. And you already know—they took the bait. This shift helped spark protests by women who wanted prostitution banned altogether. (Click here to read more.)

Now here’s the part that gets uncomfortable for some:Almost every woman has engaged in some form of prostitution. Don’t panic—let me explain.

If you’ve ever used sex to get something—like a bag, a bill paid, jewelry—that’s transactional. If you asked for something before sex or put it all the way down in the bedroom and then asked… sis, that’s still prostitution. If you feel obligated to have sex because you were flown out or taken on a trip—or you expect sex when you host the trip—that’s prostitution, too.

Even in dating, some women withhold sex until their date has reached a certain standard: a certain number of dinners, a luxury experience, or a specific lifestyle. And you know what? That’s fine—but if that’s you, don’t turn around and shame the girl doing her thing in a hotel room with a stranger. It’s all under the same umbrella—just different degrees.

And let’s be honest: how many times has your mama or auntie said, “They don’t have a problem asking you for sex!” What do you think they were really saying?

Get something out of the deal. Now the real question is: what’s your “something”? Is it love, security, money, or just a good time?

Either way, own it—just know the game you’re playing.
