Let It Rain Or......Pee!?

Golden Showers is an umbrella term for people who desire being peed on, peeing on others, peeing on self, holding their pee, and/or drinking someone else’s pee.

This sexual kink has a few names: urine (piss) play, watersport, urophilia, and of course golden showers!

Believe it or not, golden showers are more popular than many people think. While it's often considered a taboo topic, research shows that plenty of people have fantasized about urine play.

A 2020 survey of more than 4,000 Americans conducted by sex educator and researcher Dr. Justin Lehmiller for his book Tell Me What You Want found that 8% of heterosexual women, 19% of heterosexual men, 20% of lesbian and bisexual women, and 40% of gay and bisexual men reported fantasizing about piss play. So, if this kink has ever crossed your mind, you’re welcome, I found your people!

Before I continue, understand that urine removes toxins from the body. Do what you will with this information.

Why Would Someone Enjoy Being Peed On?

People who enjoy urine play often cite one or more of these reasons:

  • Power Dynamics: Some enjoy the dominance and submission aspect. Being peed on can symbolize surrender, trust, or being "claimed" by a partner.

  • Rebelling Against Society: Because urine play is considered socially unacceptable by many, the taboo factor can make it feel more exciting, liberating may I add.

  • Heightened Sensation: Holding urine can increase bladder sensitivity and pelvic pressure, which some people say enhances arousal and orgasm intensity.

  • Sensory Appeal: The warmth, wetness, and physical sensation of urine on the skin can be pleasurable for some participants.

Like many kinks, urine play isn't necessarily about the act itself—it's often about the feelings, sensations, and dynamics that come with it.

Before You Have A Pissing Contest:

  • Get Clear Consent: Nothing happens without an enthusiastic "yes." Discuss boundaries, expectations, and exactly what you're comfortable exploring.

  • Stay Hydrated: Well-hydrated urine is typically lighter in color and odor. Diet can also affect smell—yes, even asparagus can make a noticeable difference.

  • Think Before You Swallow: While urine is generally sterile when it leaves a healthy urinary tract, it can contain bacteria and other waste products that may cause stomach discomfort.

  • Avoid the Vagina: Urine can disrupt the vagina's natural pH balance and increase irritation. If urine play involves penetration, be mindful of hygiene and body-safe practices.

  • Protect Your Space: Mattresses, carpets, and flooring don't always mix well with bodily fluids. Waterproof pads (such as chuck pads) make cleanup much easier than a pile of towels.

  • Don't Skip Aftercare: Check in with your partner afterward. A quick conversation can help ensure everyone feels comfortable, respected, and emotionally supported.

Sidebar: the rectum is an exit. If you decide to urinate inside of the rectum, the urine will come out…be prepared! Unlike the rectum, when fluids enter the vagina, it has the potential to travel through the cervix to the uterus and fallopian tubes. This is can be an infection waiting to happen…be cautious!

Golden showers may be a kink, but consent, communication, and preparation should never be optional.

Health Risk

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are carried through blood, vaginal fluid, sperm and semen. Urine is typically not a bodily fluid that can carry STIs and HIV. The worst-case scenario engaging in Golden Showers is an overload of bad bacteria that can cause vaginal irritation including bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infection, and Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). Additionally, golden showers can cause skin irritation, unbalanced PH level, and an upset stomach.

Again, urine is one way the body removes toxins. Consuming urine can affect your kidneys simply because you are introducing toxins, concentrated salt, or absorbed medications into your body! Reasons why hydration is emphasized is to help remove these items before Golden Showers take place.

It is strongly recommended to avoid urinating in someone’s eyes, ears, and broken skin. If bacteria enter these openings, it causes irritation or an infection. In the event, urine does enter these orifices, rinse the area thoroughly with clean water! If all fails, call poison control immediately at 800-222-1222.

Frequently Asked Questions About Golden Showers

Q: Are golden showers safe?

A: Golden showers are generally considered low risk when practiced between consenting adults who communicate boundaries and follow basic hygiene practices. However, urine can cause irritation, introduce bacteria, and upset the stomach if ingested.

Q: Can you get an STI from urine?

A: Urine is not typically considered a major carrier of HIV or most sexually transmitted infections. However, if blood is present or someone has an active infection, transmission risks may increase.

Q: Is it safe to pee in the vagina?

A: No. Urinating in the vagina may disrupt its natural pH balance and increase the risk of irritation, bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infections, or urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Q: What are the risks of drinking urine?

A: Drinking urine may expose you to bacteria, concentrated salts, medications, and waste products filtered by the body. Some people may experience nausea, stomach upset, or dehydration.

Q: What's the most important rule for urine play?

A: Consent. All participants should enthusiastically agree to the activity, discuss boundaries beforehand, and check in with each other afterward.
