Vengeance written by Zane
Caprice Tatum left Atlanta at 14 after experiencing deep betrayal by people she once trusted. Relocating to New York City, her powerful singing voice was discovered, propelling her to fame as the international superstar Wickett, also known as Ladonna. Now, on the eve of her 40th birthday, Wickett returns to Atlanta to face the people and memories that shaped—and scarred—her past.
While the premise was strong, the plot didn’t land for me.
You should know upfront: this book explores heavy topics such as sexual trauma, power dynamics, and unconventional intimacy. If those themes are of interest, you might find the story more engaging than I did. I did appreciate the author’s effort to incorporate important mental health themes like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, as well as a positive depiction of therapy and healing.
However, the narrative was more of a character study than a revenge story, which left me underwhelmed. The focus stayed mostly on Wickett’s life journey—her childhood, career, and celebrity lifestyle—rather than on a driving plot or a powerful twist. The "turning point" was subtle, and not quite the payoff I had hoped for.
Many readers have rated the book highly, so don’t let my review discourage you if the themes interest you. Just be aware that it’s a slow burn with emotionally intense content. For me, it wasn’t a page-turner—I finished it mostly to move on, not because I was intrigued by what came next.
Until Next Time,
The Vagina Liberator
