A Deeper Love Inside The Porsche Santiaga Story Book Review | by Sister Souljah
Book Review: A Deeper Love Inside the Porsche Santiago Story
Released in 2012, A Deeper Love follows Porsche Santiaga, the middle sister of Winter from Coldest Winter Ever.
I am this book’s and Porsche Santiaga’s biggest fan and advocate! This is the story that deserves the hype Coldest Winter Ever receives.
This book is a true coming of age tale. It picks up after Porsche is torn from her family in Coldest Winter Ever, and it traces the struggles she faces from ages 8 to 16.
Let’s get into it. Porsche was immediately placed in foster care and later a detention center for her "bad" behavior. Like Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, Porsche had enough of Juvie Alcatraz so she planned the greatest escape. This is where the coming of age begins! Survival matured this little girl fast! She’s literally a baby on the run.
Not gon’ lie, I was a little lost at first because there was this character, Siri, who kept popping up and disappearing. Once I researched, I learned that Porsche is schizophrenic (spoiler alert), and Siri is her alternate personality. This detail should’ve been clearer in the book.
Nonetheless, subtle clues are present in the text, but understanding this context helped me appreciate how the story captures mental illness, resilience, and identity. However, I do wish the author would've expressed schizophrenia better––or maybe I'm slow.
Reading this book was an emotional journey. Porsche endures heartbreak, confusion, and abuse while trying to navigate a fractured family and her own inner turmoil.
She's the one who put the cape on her back and tried to save her mom and twin siblings. Where TF was Winter? Somewhere chasing clothes and boys! Sis, never hustled up a dime! “Is this your king?!”
The best part about this story was Sister Souljas's ability to explore middle child syndrome, duplicity, hopelessness, and the challenges of mental illness—while also highlighting Porsche’s strength and determination to survive.
Honestly, A Deeper Love is a better read than Coldest Winter Ever. The characters feel real, the struggles feel authentic, and the story is deeply moving. Because what happens to the babies when their parents are incarcerated and addicted to drugs?
If you haven’t read it yet, this is a must-read for fans of the Coldest Winter Ever. I’m hopeful a sequel to Porsche’s story is in the works because it's more deserving than Winter.
A Deeper Love is what people think is the Coldest Winter Ever!
Happy Reading,
The Vagina Liberator
