Coldest Winter Ever Book Review | Sister Souljah Urban Fiction Classic
Book Review: Coldest Winter Ever
I read Coldest Winter Ever as a child and decided to reread it as an adult—and honestly? This story is 100% overhyped!
The book follows Winter Santiaga, the oldest of four, born to parents who had her at just fifteen.
So boom—her father, Ricky Santiaga was a notorious kingpin in Brooklyn. Once he got his bag up, he moved his family from an apartment in Bed-Stuy to a mansion in New Jersey. Life was overly loaded! But when the feds shut down his operation, Ricky received a life sentence—leaving the family with nothing!
At the age of sixteen or seventeen, Winter was used to luxury—the original “fly girl.” However, she tried her best to keep up an image her father provided. She did whatever it took to keep a lifestyle that was no longer hers while also trying to to appeal to Midnight, a father’s youngest soilder. Spoiler, he was not interested!
When Winter finally turns eighteen, she doesn’t have any source of income, or a place to live to rescue her siblings from the corrupt system. Winter’s whole personality was her appearance! Not becoming a boss in her own right, and damn sure not supporting her family. She thought having style was her father’s legacy!
On the other hand, Winter’s mother was crushed by their circumstances and discovering Ricky fathered a child outside their marriage. This resulted in her battling drug addiction and depression, which left Winter to fend for herself.
Winter’s behavior was frustrating. She was an entitled, immature, shallow, selfish ass brat. I do not like her! I kept hoping she would rise to become a queenpin to save her family, but she never did, which made it hard to root for her. Overall, there was no character development!
If you read this book as a teen, read it as adult and tell me if you still feel as though this is the GOAT of urban fiction.
Three hundred plus pages of a little girl chasing an aesthetic while her father and siblings are state property and her mother is a homeless drug abuser—whoopty doo!
Happy Reading,
The Vagina Liberator
