13 Weeks Pregnant

Remember those fibroids I told you about a few months ago? Well according to my new OBGYN, they are collectively the size of a 12 week pregnancy! Now I understand why it is difficult for me to lose my belly fat.

Recently my previous Gynecologist retired. This was the perfect opportunity to seek care from an OBGYN who is a black woman. After doing research, I found Dr. LaRae Brown at UF Health. Establishing care as a new patient was difficult, but it was worth the wait. I came into my appointment with a printout of my ultrasound from the previous provider. Dr. Brown educated me on the results, ordered a new ultrasound, amongst a host of other things.

I never had such a thorough annual visit. I felt safe in her care! If her Medical Assistant never told me she was on call, I wouldn’t have known I was her only in office patient for the day. Yet, Dr. Brown was energetic, kind, welcoming, educational, and took her time in my appointment. The babies who were probably crowning did not matter (LOL JK)! In one appointment, there was a huge difference in care! Here are a few things Dr. Brown did as an OBGYN that I never experienced:

1.     Asked if I wanted to get tested for STIs

a. I always request this.

2.     Discussed my sex life

a. Beyond the amount of partners!

3.     Reassured that I have her confidentiality

a.  Of course you know that, but her tone, body language, I felt safe.

4.     Ordered labs to address other issues

a. One issue is usually caused by an underlying issue.

5.     Asked me what I wanted

a. "My body, my choice" right? She took my inquiry about a partial hysterectomy seriously!!

Sis, this is your sign to switch providers! Find someone who cares about your plan of care. It’s your life, your health!
