Book Review: A Psychological Romance About Love, Ego, and Timing

This book was amazing.

Dr. Kasen Phillips is a psychiatrist who spends his days counseling other people through life-altering decisions. Ironically, it takes one of his own patients to shake him awake. During a session, Kasen realizes his patient will be dying soon. Before the session ends, the patient delivers the classic “live your life like it’s your last” speech—and it hits Kasen hard.

That moment becomes the push Kasen needs to stop playing games and finally commit. After three years together, he decides it’s time to make Raine, his longtime girlfriend, his wife.

In true dramatic fashion, Kasen shows up at the school where Raine works as a guidance counselor and proposes to her on the spot. In his mind, this is the ultimate romantic gesture.

In reality? It does not go the way he planned.

Instead of excitement and tears of joy, Kasen is met with hesitation. And that alone sends him into a quiet rage. What makes him even angrier is the irony—Raine has always been clear that she wanted to be married. She wants Kasen as her husband. However, she also has personal reservations that she insists on explaining later that evening, once they’re home and can talk privately.

But Kasen doesn’t want to wait. His ego is bruised, and he leaves furious.

While driving home, he repeatedly calls Raine to let her know he’s on the way. She doesn’t answer. Each unanswered call adds fuel to his anger. By the time he arrives home, he’s emotionally wound tight—and then reality hits.

Raine is gone.

Not just gone for the night. Gone gone. All of her belongings are missing. No note. No explanation. Just absence.

Heartbroken, confused, and spiraling, Kasen is forced to confront the fact that the woman he thought he had under control made a decision of her own. The person who helps him survive what he believes is the worst moment of his life? His assistant, Voncile, who becomes his emotional anchor during the fallout.

This psychological romance explores love, timing, ego, and what happens when someone assumes commitment is only valid when it happens on their terms. It’s messy, emotional, and quietly powerful—and absolutely worth the read.
