Vaginal Dryness is Normal

The vagina is a muscle used for sex, childbirth, and as an exit for your period. Along the vaginal walls, there's a clear fluid to keep the vagina lubricated. The hormone estrogen is needed to maintain the health, elasticity, and hydration of the vagina. If the estrogen levels decrease, so does vaginal lubrication. A decline in estrogen levels can happen overtime for any reason.

So what are the causes of vaginal dryness when there isn't a decline is estrogen levels? I'm glad you asked!

Birth control

Allergy and cold medications

Some antidepressants

Douching (please stop! This is also harmful)

Sjogren's syndrome (an autoimmune disorder that attacks cells in the body that produce moisture)

Partial hysterectomy

Surgical removal of ovaries (where estrogen is produced)

Menopause

Childbirth and breastfeeding

Lack of clit stimulation

Treatment for cancer

Anti-estrogen medications

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Outside of discomfort and pain during sex, here are some signs of vaginal dryness:

Burning during urination

Constant vaginal and vulva irritation

Increased urge to urinate

Pain or discomfort during sex and tampon use

There are several treatment options available but it's best you speak with your OBGYN about the cause of your vaginal dryness. In the meantime, use lube to increase comfort and pleasure during sex!

p.s Stay tuned, next Wednesday I'll share tips on how to help with vaginal lubrication production with the absence of medication and medical conditions.
